Overview
OssFin uses AI in two places: reading the financial documents you upload, and answering general questions in the assistant. Everything else (budgets, net worth, tax estimates, forecasts and insights) is calculated by OssFin's own formulas and rules, not generated by AI.
No training on your data
OssFin trains no models. Our provider, Anthropic, does not train on content sent through its commercial API.
Never advice
Every assistant answer is checked before you see it. An answer that tells you what to do is rewritten or withheld.
Only what is needed
The assistant does not see your accounts unless you turn on Personal mode, and then only rounded totals. Identifiers you type, such as account, card and Social Security numbers, email addresses and phone numbers, are removed before your message is sent.
Yours to delete
Deleting your account deletes your documents, the data extracted from them and your assistant history.

In Personal mode the assistant does not search the web, so your figures are never part of a search. Answers written from your figures are labeled as such.
Both features run on Anthropic's Claude models. Anthropic is the only AI provider that receives your data.
The assistant explains; it never advises
OssFin is not a registered investment adviser, broker or tax preparer, and the assistant does not give personalized financial, investment, tax or legal advice. That rule is enforced in three layers:
- Your question is screened. A request for a specific recommendation, such as which fund to buy or whether to roll over a retirement account, gets an offer to explain how it works instead of a pick.
- The answer is checked before you see it. If the answer tells you what to do, it is rewritten once to explain the options instead. If the rewrite still reads as a recommendation, you see a short message instead of that answer.
- Facts come from sources. Figures, limits and rules are looked up on government sites (such as irs.gov and ssa.gov) and a small set of named financial institutions, and the sources are shown with the answer.
AI can still be wrong. Check any figure that matters against the cited source, and for a decision about your own situation, talk to a licensed professional.
What is kept, and for how long
- Documents: the file and the data extracted from it are stored encrypted in your account (AES-256-GCM) until you delete the document or your account.
- Assistant conversations: each question and answer is stored encrypted for 24 months for compliance review, then deleted automatically. Deleting your account deletes them right away.
- At Anthropic: under its standard commercial API policy, inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days, subject to exceptions such as safety investigations and legal requirements.
What OssFin will not do with AI
- Train AI models on your data, or let a provider do so.
- Sell, license or commercialize your data or anything derived from it, including anonymized data.
- Let AI move money, place trades or make decisions on your accounts. OssFin's access to your accounts is read-only.
- Add another AI provider without first updating this page and our Privacy Policy.
